Now You Can Use Gmail via Offline

Gmail Goes Offline

Google has just announced it's making an offline version of its Gmail e-mail service available today. The new feature will be initially available to users of its Googles Apps online suite of productivity applications, which includes Gmail. Over the next few weeks, Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) said it will make the feature available to consumers and others who use the stand-alone version of Gmail. With offline access, Gmail users will be able to launch the program from an Internet browser to view and respond to e-mails as well as create new ones. However, the e-mails will remain in Outbook until the user is connected online at which point the application sends them automatically. Although not connected to send or receive e-mails, offline Gmail users will also still be able to perform other standard functions of the program such as "starring," or marking individual e-mails considered a priority for viewing later. E-mails that are starred in Gmail can be viewed as a list, separate from all other e-mails.
Gmail is a product of Google Labs, which features a number of programs in an experimental stage. Gmail, first released in 2004, is still famously labeled "BETA" though it's been considered a finished service in terms of reliability and feature set for years. The offline Gmail is built on Google's Gears platform, which has already been used to enable offline access to Google Docs, Google Reader and other third-party Web applications.

Google said the offline feature takes a few steps to enable:

*First, sign into Gmail and click 'Settings'.

*Click the 'Labs' tab and select 'Enable' next to 'Offline Gmail.' Click 'Save Changes.'

*In the upper right-hand corner of your account, next to your username, there will be a new 'Offline' link. Click this link to start the offline synchronization process.

venus during the day

today (thursday) and tomorrow (friday) provide excellent opportunities to see the bright planet venus during the day - which is one of my favorite astronomical phenomena! the very thin crescent moon sits right next to venus during these two days, making it easier to adjust your eyes to venus's position.

from both hemispheres, the crescent of the moon opens toward venus today, then tomorrow, venus sits on the convex side of the moon.

happy planet hunting!

Make Your Own Radio Station

* Winamp (Any Version) is must.

First, things First your speed has to be at least 256/64 kbps (which means Dial-up users, will have alot of latency, just dnt bother)
Second, your going to have to have a domain, an updated one with the current i.p active. (Could be anything e.g. My sig)

Now, Your gonna have to download the Shoutcast Files.

Go to www.shoutcast.com to get the files.

Ok After downloading these, installing Both of them in any order i dnt care. Go to START>PROGRAM FILES>SHOUTcast DNAS>EDIT SHOUTCAST DNS CONFIG.

Ok your gonna have to Configure it:
Go Down and where it says password: change (that means your gonna have to change it to whatever, make sure u remember)
The Portbase: change it to whatever port you want it
Maxusers: (lets be realistic here, dnt put in 10000, like NXS's radio station) your bandwidth has to be extremely good, if your cable, 50 user max is ok, ADSL should stay below 10 users, and T1 connections should do whatever tickles there fantasy.

Open winamp, RIGHT CLICK>OPTIONS>PREFRENCES>DSP EFFECT> and choose the NULLSOFT SHOUTCAST.

Go to OUTPUT, and then click on Connection, Through the ADDRESS, type your address which you have done through www.no-ip.com, PORT NUMBER, whatever u did in the EDIT.txt, and your password.

Then go to Encoder, and choose your quality of your music. Go back to OUTPU>OUTPUT CONFIG> YELLOW PAGES. this is your advertisemant information. dow hatever you like there.

Now Connect. to check that your Radio os on-line go to http://(your address that you added in the prefrence)

the quality of this video isnt that great, but without a doubt, it'll warm your heart.

what should hubble look at?

as part of the international year of astronomy festivities, the hubble site has launched a project where we get to choose an astronomical object for the hubble space telescope to observe!

already existing images and descriptions of the possible targets are available at youdecide.hubblesite.org, where you can also vote by March 1st! the choices:

NGC 6634 - star forming region
NGC 6072 - planetary nebula
NGC 5172 - spiral galaxy
NGC 4289 - edge-on spiral galaxy
Arp 274 - interacting galaxies
NGC 40 - planetary nebula

i'm biased in opinion as i study galaxies and think interacting galaxies are incredibly exciting, but i would be happy to see hubble's view of any of the objects listed above.

i will leave you with a great compilation of cosmic collisions previously captured by the hubble space telescope, which now sits as my desktop background:

thanks to the astronomy blog for the tip.

long exposure photographs

we use long exposures to capture the photons flying thru space from very distant objects. its not uncommon to expose for eight hours on a faint galaxy 11 billion light years away just to catch a faint signal!

images created by opening the shutter for a couple minutes reveal amazing phenomena on earth as well! here are a couple examples from an online digital photography school.

20 second exposure by sara heinrichs

114 second exposure by MumbleyJoe

i dont actually know if aigar truhin used a longer exposure to capture these strange light pillars over latvia, but its a cool image anyway!

i love this unforgettable image of picasso...

i cant find the link now, but i read somewhere on the internets that photographer gjon mili visited picasso in 1949 and told him about a technique of creating drawings from light using long exposures. picasso was instantly inspired and used a "light pen" to sketch this bull. brilliant!

flying bananas!

never thought bananas could be scary, but daniela edburg certainly achieved the effect in this photo!

thanks to bernd missal for the link!

    tycho crater: 3D!

on the moon, theres a large crater named tycho. it's the big one toward the southwest, with ejecta shooting out in every direction.

here's an amazing three dimensional video of its structure... here. 3D glasses: use 'em if you gottem! (the video is much much better in the high-res version).

the crater's shape is created from the impact of an object falling to the ground and splashing up material all around. you can sort of visualize the process from this excellent video of a water droplet falling into sand.

of course the structure of the sand after the impact quickly fades away, but you can still see the ring of material shot out in every direction and then one lingering mound of stuff right in the middle at the impact location.

Hide Files Inside A JPEG Image File

    1. Gather the file you wish to bind, and the image file, and place them in a folder. For the sake of this demonstration,I will be using C:\New Folder
*The image will hereby be referred to in all examples as tricks.jpg
*The file will hereby be referred to in all examples as New Text Document.txt

    2. Add the file/files you will be injecting into the image into a WinRar .rar or .zip. From here on this will be referred to as (secret.rar)

    3. Open command prompt by going to Start > Run > cmd

    4. In Command Prompt, navigate to the folder where your two files are by typingcd location [ex: cd C:\New Folder]
    5. Type [copy /b tricks.jpg + secret.rar tricks.jpg] (remove the brackets)Congrats, as far as anyone viewing is concerned, this file looks like a JPEG, acts like a JPEG, and is a JPEG, yet it now contains your file.

In order to view/extract your file, there are two options that you can take

    a) Change the file extension from tricks.jpg to tricks.rar, then open and your file is there.

    b) Leave the file extension as is, right click, open with WinRar and your file is there
