Just before July 4th, my son Jonathan and his wife, Jessica, and me decided to drive west on H58 to scope out the road construction. As some of you know, the federal government included in the original legislation to develop the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in 1966, the requirement to pave a road between Grand Marais and Munising. There are 3 sections left to complete; two of which are being paved this summer. The engineering and prep work is currently being done on the last remaining section.
You can easily drive all the way to 12 mile beach campground. The road is closed past there. Since the road is already completed most of the way to the Hurricane River, you can also acdess the Hurricane, Au Sable Lighthouse, and the Log Slide. I am hearing, that you can also drive from Munising down H58 to the Adams Trail, which accesses M77 to Grand Marais.
Here are a few pictures we took on our adventure.
