A new study says the aerospace industry contributes $7.6 billion to Virginia's economy each year. The study released Friday by Gov. Bob McDonnell's office also says the industry supported more than 28,000 workers in 2009.It was the first comprehensive economic study of the industry in Virginia. The study was sponsored by the Virginia Department of Aviation, and conducted by the Performance Management Group at Virginia Commonwealth University in partnership with Chmura Economics & Analytics.
Virginia's Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport is 1 of 4 commercial orbital spaceports in the nation. It will begin commercial operations to the International Space Station from the Wallops Island Flight Facility this year.
Meanwhile, the annual Aviation/Aerospace Day Legislative Reception will be held on Wednesday evening, February 2, 2011 at the Library of Virginia. The event is sponsored by the Virginia Aviation Business Association, Virginia Aviation Board, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Langley Research Center and industry partners. The event is hosted by Virginia State Senator Charles J. Colgan and State Delegate Joe T. May to promote support for Virginia’s aviation and aerospace interests. STEM education in aerospace will also be promoted.
