New Mexico Spaceport Authority Directors Ousted by Gov. Susana Martinez

The New Mexico Spaceport Authority board of directors are out, dismissed Friday afternoon by Gov. Susana Martinez citing financial concerns and the need for new leadership in the continuing saga of political change at Spaceport America.

"Given its significant costs, I believe that developing the spaceport to its full potential requires more robust private investment and new leadership to make necessary adjustments," Martinez said. More than half the money for the $209 million spaceport in Sierra County is from taxpayers. Martinez said the state "must explore ways to ease the significant financial commitment that taxpayers have made in this project."

Earlier this week, Martinez appointed a team including to evaluate the spaceport's finances, contracts and search committee for a new authority executive director.

Virgin Galactic has signed a 20-year contract, UP Aerospace is expected to be a client, and Armadillo Aerospace plans to test rocket technology at the spaceport but unease about the spaceport could be detrimental according to some in New Mexico.
