Russians Begin Year of the Cosmonaut


The Russian Year of Cosmonautics has started with celebration planning to fete the first human in space - Yuri Gagarin in April. Half a century ago Gagarin opened a new road for humanity with a 108 minute flight into space. In the past fifty years almost 500 cosmonauts and astronauts have gone to space. One of the highlights marking the 50th anniversery of Gagarin's flight will be an unmanned Russian-lead mission to Mars and its moon Phobos to launch in late 2011 with a sample return to Earth from Phobos in 2014.
