Grand Marais Winter

After taking a few days off exercise upon returning home, I started back in a few days ago. Although I wanted to cross country ski, the temperatures were in the low 30s resulting in sticky snow. Thus, friends and I snowshoed through the school forest to Pathway Beach. I was quite curious to see how much ice had accumulated on shore. The icebergs on shore are around ten feet high, but there is a lot of ice hugging shore. If we get a big blow out of the north, the ice will accumulate and increase the height of the icebergs.




That night we had freezing rain, so the next day we decided to cross country ski. The temperatures dipped back down and the trails were well groomed which allowed us to lock into the grooves and ski very fast, especially on the down hill. I was having so much fun that I didn't take any pictures.

Yesterday the temperatures were back into the mid-30s so Wendy and I decided to snowshoe into the dunes. It was a very long snowshoe since we chose to go see the sacred spot that we found in the dunes a few months ago. It was so windy in the dunes that we almost got blown off a ridge, so we bailed back down into the woods. Between the wind and the deep snow at the transition zone between woods and dunes -- it was quite the adventure!







This time of year the snow starts to pile up on the down trees. This is especially noticeable on the trees over the rivers.
