rockstar or physicist?

this was the question i asked myself back in my rock band undergrad days! hahaha!!

i joined the band during my second year in college and we chose the name perelandra. we played in clubs all over clifton (near the university of cincinnati's campus), and especially a lot at the mad frog! i sang, mostly back up vocals, but led some songs as well. some of the guys in the band were pretty hard-headed so at rehearsals i mostly just sat back, drank natty light and worked on my physics homework while they battled out the arrangement of songs! i would've loved to have played keyboards as well... and i tried... but i could never manage to sing and play at the same time. oh well. i'll keep practicing!

two great memories stick out in my mind. we played for an hour long live radio show a couple times and the first one was right after a phish concert. i have my favorite hippy-ish shirt (that my friend, lindsey made for me) on under that purple fleece, but i dont have any pictures of it...

another favorite memory occured at the mad frog. they had a showcase night where a tons of bands played for an hour each. the only catch was that every band had to play the theme song for a TV show. we chose star trek and i got to sing that really high and lofty female part... remember that one? i was so embarrassed and nervous, but man it was fun!

after two years of writing songs (and even traveling to indiana for a show!!), the band answered my long-standing question for me....

i lived in chicago for two summers to work for the sloan digital sky survey. when i returned to cincinnati after the second summer, the band was no longer.... one band member stole the girlfriend of another band member and then married her! those silly boys and their drama! sheesh!

i have a couple analog recordings of us packed away in a box in a garage in austin. when i return, i'll have to transfer them to digital media! until then... the songs live on in my mind. it was a heck of a fun time and i would love to sing in a band again one day, but i'm glad i chose astrophysics!!
