China People's Liberation Army Commander Says Space Weapons "historical inevitability"

China's People Liberation air force commander Xu Qiliang said Monday it was imperative for the PLA air force to develop offensive and defensive operations in outer space since militarisation of space is a "historical inevitability."

"As far as the revolution in military affairs is concerned, the competition between military forces is moving towards outer space... this is a historical inevitability and a development that cannot be turned back," Xu told the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Daily.

"The PLA air force must establish in a timely manner the concepts of space security, space interests and space development. We must build an outer space force that conforms with the needs of our nation's development (and) the demands of the development of the space age," Xu reportedly said.

Both the United States and the People's Republic of China have in recent years shot their own satellites from space. China and Russia have called for a space weapons ban treaty seeking to make offensive satellite weapons contrary to international law.

President Barack Obama now has American military, civilian, and commercial space policy [vid lecture] under review at the White House. Obama is expected to enter into a nuclear arms reduction treaty with the Russians early next month.
