World Institute for Science and Engineering: Innovation Comes Where Least Expected

The Lonesome Pine Technology and Business Center in Wise, Virginia is about to become home to a new organization called the World Institute for Science and Engineering (WISE) [link not live yet].

In discussions with the founders, it is clear that WISE is poised to develop new cutting edge aerospace technologies in a strategy that has been developed over the last four years. Among the technologies that are expected to be developed there are next generation propulsion applications utilizing lasers, thorium, fusion electro-magnetic drives as well as cutting edge docking and life support technologies.

The focus is commercially driven manned and robotic exploration of our solar system. While the founders are not yet ready to disclose too many details, one institute organizer did say, “Our mission includes an extremely important outreach component for young people. If there is one thing that a young person in a metropolitan city or a rural region have in common, it’s that they have had their frontier taken away from them. WISE intends to give it back to them.”

With the national policy drive for renewed American commercial innovation, it appears that 2010 is shaping up to be a landmark year of inspiration and excitement in the field of aerospace technology. Stay tuned - innovation comes from where you may least expect it!
