Liftoff [vid] of the maiden Japanese HTV cargo ship aboard the new H-2B rocket occurred as scheduled at 1:01 p.m. EDT from the Yoshinobu launch complex at the Tanegashima space center. The H-2B boosted the HTV-1 carrying 5 tons of supplies and cargo to the International Space Station. The Japanese HTV-1 will dock with the ISS on Thursday, September 17, 2009. Meanwhile, the Space Shuttle Discovery is planning a return to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida from the International Space Station. Only six space shuttle missions remain for the shuttle fleet.
