In the wake of the December 21, 2010 lunar eclipse, at 2 p.m., Washington time, on January 3, 2011, the Earth reaches perihelion - the closest approach to the Sun in our elliptical orbit, a little more than 91 million miles away. For some reason, this is a moment that goes uncelebrated, entirely unheralded. The perihelion will also be marked by a partial solar eclipse in part of the world.
