First Female Spacewalk Remembered; China Plans First Woman to Orbit in 2012


Twenty-five years ago Russian cosmonaut Svetlana Savitskaya became the second woman to travel into orbit, the first also Russian, but she was the first woman to walk in space. The Chinese are now in the process of selecting female Taikonaut ("yuhangyuan") flyers for their space program from among 16 candidates with a plan to orbit in 2012. Now among the sixteen candidates, aged aged 21 to 24, is 22-year old fighter pilot and People's Liberation Army Lieutenant Tao Jiali.
