the ashes is a long series of cricket matches played between england and australia every 18 to 30 months (?). i dont understand cricket. i dont understand it so much that i have no idea why the ashes is actually a series of test cricket matches instead of just regular cricket.
i know the matches can last for days and i know that my friends in england, who care about cricket, are very excited that im in australia right now. apparently they feel i am somehow obliged to be happy (and brag?) about england's recent performance.
anyway, while i lived in england i was too excited by all the soccer games i could watch to bother paying any attention to learning the rules of cricket or rugby. notice how i called it soccer instead of football? thats because here in australia the word football could potentially mean like 3 different sports, so i've cut out all ambiguity and gone back to calling my favorite sport simply soccer!
i'm at a loss when it comes to popular sports in australia because there is rugby league, rugby union, cricket (and apparently test cricket), aussie rules football, and good old soccer. this SMBC cartoon summarizes my knowledge... just substitute any of the above for football except, of course, soccer.

how is saturn like an octopus?
NASA's cassini website shows saturn all decked out in world cup garb!

so... does saturn predict holland or spain to win? if you havent read about the "sucker for soccer" octpus who seemingly predicts the winner of late-stage WC matches, thats perfectly alright. it just means the title of this post makes no sense.
either way, a team from a country who has never won a world championship will be the new world cup winners, and i think thats great!!
although, i will be suffering some serious soccer withdrawal over the upcoming weeks :(

the world cup from england
as you've been able to tell, i've been anticipating the world cup for a long while, and have been especially excited to experience all the matches in a country whose population, in general, takes the tournament much more seriously than people from my home nation, the US.

when i moved to england i joined an informal five-a-side match organized by fellow astronomers and their friends. i felt silly telling people i played "soccer" but when i told british friends i played "football" once a week, some people looked confused and actually asked if i wore shoulder pads!?
here are a few other phrases i've picked up over the last two years that have been especially useful for avoiding getting laughed at by the brits during the world cup (which happens anyway, i should add):
it's called a "draw" here, not a "tie."
the score is "nil-nil" not "zero-zero."
it's a "match," not a "game."
they usually call a "coach" and "manager."
your uniform, shin guards, shoes and all are called your "kit." in fact "shoes" are really "boots" and "shin guards" are called something else that i cant remember right now because i'm the only one who ever wears them when we play!
the sport is played on a "pitch," not a "field."
the "skipper" is the captain.
when time is up and there is a draw, the teams have to play "extra time" not "over time."
if you have the lower score at the end of the match you have been "defeated." you didnt "lose."
the sweet yummy things cutely decorated below are called "fairy cakes," not "cup cakes."

the media build up to the world cup here was intense. they constantly gave us messages of impending glory for the english boys. they told us that the national team had a solid chance to bring home the world cup trophy. now, i'm all for team spirit and a country supporting their players, but i was a bit surprised to hear such lofty build up, when my own predictions didnt have england going past the quarter finals (not that i'm any authority, mind). yes, the england squad was made up of quality players, but wasnt this a bit too much pressure to put on them before they even stepped onto the south african pitch?
but from what i have witnessed over the last several weeks, i think it was fitting for the english to build up their team with such ridiculously high expectations because it allowed them to enjoy their national past time: moaning.
i dont say this to be mean, i genuinely think people (must) enjoy it. it all started with moaning about how badly the national team played when they "couldnt even beat the US." i heard echoes of the ever-popular refrain: "typical." now i admit that the US got away with a trick by pulling out a point from the match, but neither team looked impressive enough to come away with 3 points (in my opinion).
i watched england's second match at a pub and was completely shocked by the abusive phrases the (admittedly drunken) lads yelled at the TV as it became less and less likely that england would score a winning goal against algeria. and then the fans that made the trip all the way to south africa to support their national team stood up and booed the players off the field. really? give them no credit what-so-ever for actually getting a point from the match - they didnt lose!!? nope. abusive insults and boo-ing.
after the USA's final match, a friend commented that he was very surprised by my calmness after our loss. well, we didnt play well or score goals. you cant win a match if you dont score goals. but i guess no matter what reaction i had it would have seem subdued compared to the disgust shown by typical english football fan after a loss. thats not entirely true though, because after their loss to germany, the city of nottingham was amazingly quiet.
any way you look at it, the premier league players make such stupid amounts of money each year to play the sport that maybe they should be able to handle a little pressure from their country folk.
regardless, i'm excited to see the rest of the world cup matches after a brief couple days of football withdrawal! the south american teams are looking strong, but i'm still hoping that the trophy will be won by a national that has never won before.
and dont forget, thre is a total solar eclipse on the same day as the world cup final, july 11, which will happen shortly before kickoff! you'll be able to watch the eclipse live on line this year! stay tuned....

sixty symbols: testing the jabulani
there has been a bit of fuss about the official world cup ball, the jabulani, developed by adidas especially for the world cup. so for sixty symbols, brady decided to let scientists tackle the controversy behind the jabulani in a couple fun videos.
WARNING: these videos show scientists playing football! we actually play five-a-side once a week, but that might not be evident from the highlights shown here ;)
i was pretty excited to play with the jabulani and overall i was impressed by the quality. i lack the ability to purposely spin the ball in all sorts of directions so i cant comment about that aspect of the jabulani's performance, but one thing i noticed is that it bounces a lot higher than the one i'm used to playing with. maybe its a similar thing to tennis - when you use new balls they are really bouncy! brady got annoyed that we kept asking him about the air pressure and whether he filled the ball too much! ha!
the jabulani also makes an incredibly awesome echo sound when you strike it!
in addition to the fabulous football footage shown in the video above, brady put together a bonus video of our highly-competitive penalty shoot-out! i missed my penalty, but got to try out a vuvuzela!! i have no idea how people can blow those things for 90 minutes. previous experience playing brass instruments is a big plus!

guide for vuvuzela use

via the daily wh.at.
yes, they get a bit jarring when you actually listen to them, but they easily fit into the background hum enough that they dont really annoy me. what's more annoying is the low quality of football played so far in this tournament! i imagine the play will improve as the players settle into the tournament, get used to the altitude, the uber-round and light jabulani ball, and the loud vuvuzela horns droning during the games. i hope so, anyway.
one other thing - do the replays shown during the world cup matches seem ridiculously slow to anyone else? almost any expression a person can make looks impossibly hilarious when played really sllooooowwwlly!! i've laughed out loud several times when they show frustrated coaches or players. one memorable look came from david beckham on the sideline during the USA vs. england match. the image below is obviously photoshopped (see tv reflection in table), but i still think its funny!

world cup 2010: finally!
the world cup 2010 is finally upon us!!
i've been looking forward to today's match between the USA and England for a loooong time! my flag is flying high and my red cowboy boots are all shined up and ready for victory - YEEHAW! i think which ever of these two teams manages to win the group will have a relatively easy time making it thru to the late stages! you never know though, we'll see...
so who do you have placed to win the whole shuh-bang?? i'm going for spain this time because i like a lot of individual players (torres, of course) and i'm hoping for a big win by a team that has never won la copa mundial before. i know the USA surprised us all last summer by defeating spain and making it to their first ever FIFA international tournament final, but my statement still stands.
in other world cup new, i think the official world cup anthem by shakira is so bad that i wont even post a link to it, but i will share this video by the great angelique kidjo and famous musical crew:
during the build up to this world cup, i learned about the phenomenon of the world cup sticker book, which many people fill up during their childhood world cups, but i never knew about it growing up in the US... so i've decided to collect now! i've filled up about half the book so far, but i have a lot of repeat player stickers. as i do not know very many young people here to trade with, please let me know if you have extras that you might like to swap!!!

chemistry of the world cup trophy
periodic videos has a timely discussion on what the world cup trophy might be made of.
i can imagine the green malachite stripe being a question in a pub quiz this week.... we'll see!

a world cup of crisps
in honor of the world cup next month, a pub near my house is offering sausages from a dozen different countries playing in the tournament. it really made me laugh when i saw the sign, but now i'm curious about what sausages will be featured from various countries like the US, france, and even england. so of course i will be watching at least a few matches there!
i think the sausage variety is a much better idea than the one developed by Walkers crisps (potato chips). they have created 15 new flavours of crisps from different countries in the world cup, including: South African sweet chutney, Spanish chicken paella, Irish stew, American cheeseburger, Japanese chicken teriyaki, etc...

you should read the hilarious results of charlie brooker's taste test.
i mean, the british love their crisps and they certainly have an arsenal of unique and interesting flavours already on the shelves (eg. "prawn cocktail" or "smoky bacon"), but i think maybe this has gone too far....?

US men's soccer team surprises all!
congratulations to the US men's national soccer team, who have made it into their first ever FIFA international tournament final!! the confederations cup is currently happening in south africa in preparation for next year's world cup! the US succeeded in pulling off one of the most incredible upsets in recent history by defeating the current european champions, spain, 2-0 in the semi-final wednesday night! as you can imagine - i'm thrilled!!
there has been some controversy about holding the world cup in south africa: doubt as to whether they could construct all the necessary stadiums, handle the massive number of people who will come to watch the games, manage the violence reported around the region, etc... but it seems at this point as though everything is coming together successfully!
the big picture has a nice series of photos from south africa over the recent weeks in honor of the confederations cup!

the final of the confederations cup will be played this sunday: the US against Brasil!!!

kid's got moves
six year old Madin Mohammed demonstrates some impressive futbol skills! he was born in algeria and is following in the footsteps of Zinedine Zidane. its amazing to watch MM's balance as he twists around and flicks the ball around his legs and other players!
i hope that MM stays healthy and uninjured over the next decade of his life, so all options are available to him when he's gets old enough to make big choices. i also hope that the big teams tracking him remember to give him enough space to be a kid and enjoy his life!

euro cup 2008 finale
no, it wasnt a fantastically thrilling final match of the 2008 euro cup, but i was still entertained. disappointed that my team didn't win the whole thing, but their aggressive energy at the beginning of each half gradually wore out without them scoring an actual goal! on the other hand, i was thoroughly satisfied with the winning goal (video) put forth by fernando torres... the only goal of the game. as the scoring play unfolded, i thought there was no way torres was getting around lahm with enough time to hit the ball, so i nearly missed his quick flick to goal as i reached for my beer! so quick... so great! congrats espana!

i'm sure i will now enter a small period of soccer-watching withdrawal...
good thing i'll have ample family entertainment in ohio for the entirety of july, and a whole season to look forward to once i move to the UK in august! i havent kept up much with MLS lately. any thoughts on which team i should follow? i havent chosen one yet. the obvious choice would be the nottingham forest, since that'll be my new hometown team. but what about liverpool? arsenal? thoughts?

germany in the euro cup 2008 final
aside from the unfortunately dramatic power outages during the broadcast of the second half of the match, the germany-turkey bout yesterday was very exciting. i was pleased to see turkey attack early in the match. i lost count f how many shots they had on goal befre germany even had one! i was hoping for turkey to score early because if they didnt score and lost momentum, they would be tired and finished. also, a goal would produce a more exciting game! score they did and the game was off...!
germany ended up pulling thru... again... despite great playing by the turks.
the best quote i've read about the match comes from Sean O'Conor & Soccerphile: "Now the Mannschaft have reached the EURO 2008 final with a 3-2 win over an arguably better team, nodding heads are attributing their triumph to simply being German, a synonym for depressingly successful."
wish i was in germany celebrating now... and good luck sleeping, eva!
off to work early today so i can watch the spain-russia match today. russia looks good so this is a tough match to call. i think germany would be happier playing spain in the final. who know what will happen....

euro cup 2008 semi-final lineup
and so we have it...
SF1 (wed): turkey vs. germany
SF2 (thurs): russia vs. spain
i was half right on the semi-final match ups, but i still could get the right teams in the final! we'll see. i definitely think spain deserved to win today. italy finally showed the strength of their defense, but failed to attack consistently. maybe luca toni's mustache repelled the ball from coming to him, or maybe it was the missing play makers: pirlo and gattuso. my biggest hope is that this ref sits out the rest of the tournament!
i was glad to see germany step up in their QF match against portugal. i was pleased to see them score a fantastic goal that wasnt initiated from a set play. in the end, i think it was portugal's weak defense against germany's powerful set plays that cost them the game.
the croatia - turkey match started out sloppily, but they settled into a decent rhythm. unfortunate shoot outs for croatia, but what an unbelievable last few minutes of overtime play!
the netherlands started out slow against russia and played too conservatively to pose an offensive threat.
i'm still going for a spain against germany final.... but you never know what could happen in a given match in this sport!

euro cup quarterfinals
tomorrow welcomes the euro cup 2008 quarterfinals! the match-ups are:
QF1: portugal vs. germany
QF2: croatia vs. turkey
QF3: netherlands vs. russia
QF4: spain vs. italy
my predictions were pretty close, other than the lack of the czech republic and the inclusion of turkey.
italy managed to squeeze in to the next round. they've been creating scoring opportunities, but they need to finish (come on luca toni!). i also wasnt too impressed with their defense. spain and portugal both look good and i'm excited to see how long the netherlands can keep up their scoring spree!

i'm definitely excited about the germany vs. portugal match tomorrow! i'm still cheering for germany, although they definitely need to step up their game if they expect to beat portugal. i thought philipp lahm played brilliantly against austria and hope the rest of the team can feed off his play-making enthusiasm.
