Southwestern Virginia native Francis Gary Powers was shot down over the Soviet Union on May 1, 1960 in a U-2 spy plane. Powers was held and put on trial for espionage on August 19, 1960 in Moscow. Norton, VA attorney Carl E. McAfee represented Oliver Powers and the two travelled to Moscow and Washington extensively to ultimately gain the release of his son Gary on February 10, 1962. To understand the history of the U-2 Spyplane Incident movie in which Lee Majors plays Francis Gary Powers is an interesting depiction.
