Japan's HTV-1 a 'GO': Arrival at ISS Sept 17

Liftoff [vid] of the maiden Japanese HTV cargo ship aboard the new H-2B rocket occurred as scheduled at 1:01 p.m. EDT from the Yoshinobu launch complex at the Tanegashima space center. The H-2B boosted the HTV-1 carrying 5 tons of supplies and cargo to the International Space Station. The Japanese HTV-1 will dock with the ISS on Thursday, September 17, 2009. Video of the rocket rollout to the pad yesterday and more media reports today from the BBC, The New York Times, and Space.com at MSNBC.

Meanwhile, the Space Shuttle Discovery is planning a return to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida from the International Space Station. Only six space shuttle missions remain for the shuttle fleet.
